Medium is a Metaphor for the Writing Life

Perhaps you won’t be the next JK Rowling, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put yourself out there.

The question I get asked the most when I tell others that I write books (it’s literally the only thing I let myself brag about — my passion) is: “Oh, so are you trying to be the next JK Rowling?”

I always sigh a little bit on the inside. I feel like I should answer the question honestly, and tell them that very few people ever reach that kind of success. Hell, JK is the world’s first author-billionaire!

That’s not quite where I think I’ll land. It’s wonderful to dream though.

What I usually say is this: “Who knows? Maybe.”

Writing on Medium for the last four months has been a helluva ride on the The Writing School Bus, and I’ve learned more than I thought possible in this short period of time. I’ve also written more words this year already than in the last few combined.

On Medium, it’s the same in real life: you might find amazing success, but you probably won’t. You can’t count on it, at least.

And any writer who counts on being successful is just full of themselves. I know I’m a strong writer, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be a millionaire, sipping on…
